Save Handwriting and Support a Cause with BIC Fight For Your Write #BICFFYW

I have always had a passion for writing. I remember keeping a diary as young as 7 years old, and in all honesty since then I've never not used writing in one way or another as an outlet for creativity. Technology has really made a difference in the way most people choose to put words to paper (or screens.)  I still love to collect pens and notebooks and personally use them almost daily - Sometimes creatively, and sometimes for more practical reasons.  However, my handwriting has never been visually "pretty" and I chalk this up to my heavy reliance on the keyboard.  I worry for my kids' generation as technology advances and less focus is placed on handwriting in the classroom.  I believe in the necessity to learn handwriting at a young age.  I see my daughter practicing often.  She, too, loves to use writing as an creative outlet. The more she does the more confidence she builds and the more she's able to express herself.  She has great success in school, because her wonderful teachers have taken the initiative to ensure handwriting has been taught in a way that is fun, inviting but also given great significance. These teachers have given her and her peers a skill that is of lifelong importance.

BIC is encouraging Canadians to join the BIC Fight For Your Write movement. The campaign includes weekly handwriting challenges on www.BICFightForYourWrite.ca  to help prepare children for the upcoming school year and spark their creativity. For every challenge submission, BIC will donate $10 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada to help ensure Canadian children and youth have access to the best possible tools for success. You'll also be entered into a weekly draw for a chance to win amazing BIC® Stationery prizes and will earn one entry into the grand prize draw, to win $5,000 towards your child’s education.

What better way to encourage something so integral to a well rounded education, while also supporting a cause that matters nation wide?

Do check out www.BICFightForYourWrite.ca with your kids, for more information and to join in the fun!

Get Your Kids Going With Kellogg's Mini-Wheats #TryItHot #Giveaway

While Spring finally seems to be coming around, we still certainly have our fair share of chilly mornings, especially here in Winnipeg.  I like to make sure my kids have full tummies to kick-start the day, and tend to think a bowl of hot cereal is just the ticket!  My kids love Kellogg's and always favour Mini-Wheats or Special K over anything else.  Getting them to try oatmeal is sometimes like pulling teeth!

Hot milk over Mini-Wheats means my kids stay toasty, fill up their bellies and are usually off to School with a little spring in their step.  (See what I did there?  Ha.)  We love being able to mix things up with different flavors of cereal or milk, using almond milk, etc.

We received this fantastic pack of Kellogg's cereal and an insulated, portable bowl and spoon to try out some great combinations of Mini-Wheats with warm milk.  I'm excited to be able to share the same prize pack with my readers!  One lucky winner will receive the goodies pictured below.

Contest is open to Residents of Canada, and will end on  March 29th, 2015.

Hexbug Aquabot 2.0 Review

Hexbugs have become a favourite tiny toy around here.  My kids love setting up their battle habitat to watch them "fight" just as much as they enjoy watching the tiny "bugs" skitter along the kitchen floor while they hop away from them!  (And torment the dog.  And me while I'm trying to cook dinner.)

The new Hexbug Aquabot is a new way to have tons of fun with Hexbugs, only in water!

About Hexbug Aquabot 2.0
The new water-born Angelfish and Hammerhead Shark are  packed with smart fish technology, added sensors and an inner glow that makes them appear more alive than ever before!  The hi-tech sensor allows you to wake the sleeping fish by tapping on the tank.  Each fish comes with its own bowl and removable background stickers.

When we first opened our fishy and plunked him into his bowl of water, he swam around slowly and then stopped.  I panicked for a second, but then remembered we had a brand new set of power cells (batteries) to add to the fish.  Once we changed out the batteries, the fish was really able to move!  My kids get a kick out of it.  The fish now sits on the kitchen table and they've been taking turns playing with it, recording video of it and...well... talking to it. lol.  I don't believe they've given him a name yet.  It's neat to see how tapping on the glass bowl will "wake it up" -- A fun little toy!  I think it'd be super neat in the tub and can't wait to toss it in one day while the kids are bathing, and wait for the screams and laughter!

You can find out more about the Hexbug Aquabot 2.0 here!

Happy Fishing ;)

5 Tips For Bathing Baby & A Disney Baby Prize Pack #Giveaway #Canada

I remember giving both of my kids their first baths. With my daughter, it was something we did after arriving home from the hospital. I had a cute little fold out tub that fit perfectly in the kitchen sink! She wasn't too keen on the water in her face, but she always loved snuggling up in a warm towel or robe afterwards. In fact, almost 6 years later, she still does.

Here's one of my favourite pics of my baby girl at 11 weeks old, just after a bath!

Need some tips on getting your little pumpkin squeaky clean?  Bath time can be  great way for both you and baby to relax, and can be a very helpful part of a regular bedtime routine.  Here are some tips to help make your baby's bath time a success:

5 Tips for Bathing Baby

Tip #1: Start small
Your baby is little, so his bathtub should be too! When you start bathing a baby, it’s easier to do it in the sink, or using a small plastic tub. That way, you won’t have to kneel or lean awkwardly over the side of a big bath while keeping your baby upright. Some baby tubs, like this adorable Winnie the Pooh one, feature built-in toys, ensuring that bath time is fun for everyone!

Tip #2: Get some tub toys
For older babies, the bath can be a great place to learn and explore. Once your little one has graduated to a big tub, introduce them to some squirt toys, fun floaties or sponges. Disney Baby has a great selection of these, featuring characters like Nemo and Friends. Toys can keep your baby distracted and happy, helping make bath time a breeze.

Tip #3: Ditch the daily dips

Babies don’t need to bathe everyday – in fact, daily baths can dry out or damage your little one’s skin. It only takes two or three baths a week to ensure that baby stays squeaky-clean, as long as you stay vigilant about keeping face, hands and diaper area clean between washes. These Finding Nemo washcloths are the perfect way to keep baby fresh between bath times.

Tip #4: Lock in that moisture
If your baby does have dry skin, rub on a little moisturizing lotion, cream or oil post bath. There are plenty of products out there that both you and your baby can use!

Tip #5: Keep baby warm
Wet babies can become easily chilled, so throughout bath time it’s important to keep your little on warm. Ensure that bath water is around 37 degrees and that the air in the bathroom is comfortably warm as well. After the bath, wrap baby up in a soft, clean towel and give him a little snuggle! A Winnie the Pooh Bathtime Wrap keeps baby feeling cozy and looking cute.

And if you're looking for something cute and warm to dress your little pookie in, you could be in luck!  I've got this gorgeous DISNEY BABY gift set - including a 4 piece Mickey Mouse layette set, a small toy and a toddler sport drink bottle - up for Giveaway.  Open to residents of Canada, ends on Sept. 01/2014.  Enter below!

Recently Launched: Barbie Business Bursery Program and Entrepreneur Barbie #Giveaway

Growing up, I was always told I could be whatever I wanted to be as long as I worked hard to achieve that goal.  This is a message that my husband and I strive to impart on our little girl.  She's only 5 and like most kids her age, there are a  number of things she wants to be when she grows up.  I've been told she wants to be a rock star, a ballerina, a figure skater and more recently even a paleontologist or some kind of scientist.  (I think as she recently put it, she wants to be a scientist who plays rock shows in her spare time.  And why shouldn't she, right?!)

I love that for decades Barbie has been inspiring girls along the way and sending the same positive message.  I grew up playing with these dolls, and while I always loved the fashion and the glamor, I also loved giving my dolls fascinating careers and big, wild adventures.

Recently, Barbie launched the Barbie Business Bursary Program.  Kids and youth are being encouraged to dream big, and to make those dreams a reality.

About the Barbie Business Bursary Program:
The Barbie™ Business Bursary encourages Canadians to nominate a budding entrepreneur – yourself, children, siblings, cousins, students or friends – under the age of 18, who demonstrates true entrepreneurial spirit, from now until September 1, 2014

To enter the national competition, simply visit the www.barbie.com/mydreams and share your or your nominee’s entrepreneurial dream.

Barbie will select ten amazing nominees and post their video profiles on Barbie™ my Dreams; and a jury panel will then select three winners to receive a $2500 Barbie Business Bursary to fund their big ideas.

“Barbie strives to empower  children to imagine themselves in a variety of roles from pilot to president,” says Alicia Sumar, Brand Manager, Barbie – Mattel Canada Inc. “We know from research that play is a positive force that encourages a child's creativity and imagination. Playing with Barbie® fosters the belief that anything is possible. We are proud to launch this Canadian Barbie Business Bursary initiative to help make children’s’ dreams and aspirations come true.”

To celebrate, they've released Entrepreneur Barbie.  Is she awesome, or what?  She looks all business, and I love her purse!  This stylish doll has been inspired by women entrepreneurs world wide.

Up for grabs, I have one of these super cute dolls to Giveaway!  I'm sure she'll make a child somewhere very happy.  :)  Contest is open to residents of Canada.  Ends on August 11th, 2014.  Enter below!

5 Tips for Decorating Baby's Room #disneybabyCA

I am so excited to be a part of the Disney Mom Ambassador program! Our first box of beautiful Disney Baby products arrived recently, and they are going to make a lovely gift for somebody.  Here's a look at the products.

Looking back to when my daughter was born, I remember spending hours scouring pics online, looking at products and deciding how I was going to decorate the nursery.  I remember being 6 months pregnant and bursting into tears (thanks crazy hormones!) to my husband because we hadn't started on her room just yet.  I wanted it done!  And I know a lot of other Moms are the same way.

We painted my daughter's room a beautiful shade of green, because I hoped that she'd have a sibling one day and they would end up sharing for a while.  I loved the colour, I loved everything about it.  When we sold our house, the only thing that made me sad was saying goodbye to my kid's beautiful bedroom - and all the amazing memories and milestones that went along with it.

Here's what it looked like before the Little Miss was born, in its "not quite finished" state:

5 Tips for Decorating Baby's Room

1) Choose a style that’s unique to baby!  If you give yourself a focus, it’s much easier to create a cohesive design. You could start with some fun wall art as an inspiration and use that to determine your colour scheme. Or pick some bedding you love and build the room around that. This Lion King bedding set has lots of fun, neutral colours and patterns to draw from.

2) Create a nifty-nursing station.
Set up a table near a comfy chair, and keep it stocked with necessary supplies like baby-safe hand sanitizer, nursing pads, nipple cream, burp cloths and paper towels. Receiving blankets like this Winnie the Pooh set are always great to have on hand – they can be used as burp cloths, coverlets, and to keep your baby warm.

3) Get creative with storage.
With a new baby occupying a room, storage may be limited, so get creative. Add a cute bed skirt to your crib which allows you to hide boxes or supplies. Or buy a multi-bin organizer, so you can store books, toys, and clothes in one convenient location.

4) Set the mood with lighting.  The nursery should be a soothing space where your baby can fall asleep easily. Try putting your overhead light on a dimmer, or buying some small accent lamps to minimize harsh lighting. This Winnie the Pooh night light is another great way to provide safety and comfort – especially during late-night feedings.

5) Leave Room to Grow – because they will!
Remember that your baby won’t be a baby forever. It’s helpful to choose decorations that are easy to update or change as your baby grows up, so your baby’s room can grow up too. Wall Decals are detachable, reusable and they won’t harm your walls – you can remove or replace them if you’d like a change.

Thornhill Farms Gluten Free Rice Bites and Cracker Crisps #Review

It seems that more and more people in Winnipeg are turning to a gluten free diet as a means of improving the way they feel.  While many companies are catching on to the current trend and offering gluten free products, I've come across several friends and family who are on the hunt for good, wholesome gluten free alternatives to crackers, chips, breads and more.

While I'm a straight up carb lover (I won't lie, I can pack away a good chunk of homemade french garlic bread more often than I should!) I do like to have gluten-free options stocked in my pantry that are yummy for everyone, for when we have visitors.  So when we were given the opportunity to try Thornhill Farms Rice Bites and Cracker Chips, I was all over it.

The snacks come in a variety of flavours, like Applewood Smokey BBQ, Cheddar Cheese, Sea Salt & Vinegar and my personal fave Cracked Black Pepper and Lime.  All of these are certified gluten-free and they are so good!  They have a non-bland, really crispy texture that works for everyone.

Check out Thornhill Farms Foods to find out more about the individual products and where to purchase them.

Happy Snacking!

Celebrate Father's Day with Single Jo Coffee #Review #TwitterParty

I often tell people who are looking for opinions on single cup coffee machines that my Keurig is my favourite appliance of all time. I joke that if I could save one appliance in a house fire, it would be my Keurig... Except, I'm mostly not kidding! To call me a coffee aficionado is an understatement.  I have 5 varieties of coffee making apparatus' in my home -  No, I'm not exaggerating and yes, I use them all.  And I owe it all to my private high school teachers who allowed us to partake in a German tradition known as Kaffeeklatsch (or "coffee chat") a few times a week in class.  The teachers would supply the coffee - we'd bring our mugs and a positive attitude.

Since then, coffee has been a daily indulgence for me.  It's one that I have no shame in!  I love the ritual of brewing up my first cup in the morning.  I like a bold, dark roast with a good kick of caffeine.  Some days I add a splash of french vanilla creamer.  Other days I drink it black.

Do you have a favourite place to drink your morning coffee?  Mine is here:

This is where my Dad used to sit, too.  He loved his coffee as strong as I do, and always with nothing in it.  We'd often sit here on summer mornings as a family, and just reflect on the beauty of the place.  It's so peaceful!  My Dad is no longer with us, but I'll be honoring him this Father's Day by enjoying a cup of Single Jo Coffee.

Single Jo offers a great selection of Keurig compatible pods including a variety of roasts from Margaritaville, Copper Moon and Club Coffee.  The pods themselves have built in filters, rather than being completely made of plastic.  They offer less waste, and a superior taste!  I was able to try out the Club Coffee Columbian, and Copper Moon Kenyan blends.  I really liked the Columbian blend with a splash of french vanilla creamer.  And in my gorgeous new mug from Single Jo Coffee, it tasted even better!  This Coffee "Rebel" was happy, for sure.  (Want to find out your coffee profile?  Click here and take the quiz!  It's a lot of fun and you'll get some great suggestions about what Single Jo Coffees you might like best.)

Right now, for Father's Day, Single Jo Coffee is offering 15% off your order of 6 products or more.  Why not give your Dad (or your children's Dad) something he'll love and enjoy?  I know if my Dad were here, I certainly would!

And if you've got some time, please join us at The Ultimate Coffee Twitter Party on June 12th at 9pm EST.  RSVP at Shasher's Life, and make sure you join in the #HAVAJAVA fun!  You could even win a fancy pants new mug, like the one I have pictured above.  (Open to Residents of Canada.)

I hope to see you there!

@KissMeOrganics Matcha Green Tee Powder #Review #Wellness

Recently I was given the opportunity to try out some Matcha Green Tea Powder from Kiss Me Organics.  Having been on a mission to better health, I've been working on including more antioxidants and organic whole foods into mine and my family's diets.  I've loved Green Tea for a long time, but had never tried Matcha powder.  That said, I know what a great addition it can be to smoothies, baking and other things.  I couldn't wait to try it out!

About Kiss Me Organics Matcha Green Tea Powder:
  • Its 100% organic
  • Tested for purity
  • Contains more than 137x the antioxidants found in a cup of brewed tea.
  • Sold exclusively on Amazon.com
I'm not generally a tea drinker, unless I'm feeling sick.  However, I was really curious about adding the Matcha to a smoothie, so that was how I tried it first.  I threw it into a blender with some strawberries, kiwi, vanilla greek yogurt, a little water and ice and went to town.  Yum-o!  It added a nice freshness and a unique taste, without being overpowering.  I could certainly get used to drinking my Matcha this way.

Next, I plan to try baking with it.  Included with my bag of Matcha I received the link to a bunch of different recipes.  I think Cupcakes will be on my to-do list for sure, and maybe even Ice Cream if I'm feeling adventurous later this summer!

You can try Kiss Me Organics Matcha Green Tea Powder yourself, by purchasing through Amazon.com

Are you a tea drinker?  If you buy Matcha regularly, how do you like to serve it?

Tech 4 Kids: My Little Pony Fash'Ems - The Perfect Small Gift For Kids #Review

Need something small to give to one of your kids as a reward, or maybe to hand out in loot bags? Recently, I came across the perfect little toy that both of my kids happen to enjoy playing with. Fash'ems are cute, squishy little figures that you can dress up and get creative with. We were able to review a few sets of My Little Pony Fash'ems recently, making the Little Miss extremely happy.

The box we received contained 2 capsule packs, 1 style pack and 1 two pack.  The capsules are not labelled with what's inside (that's part of the fun, you try your luck!) so we did end up with multiple Twilight Sparkles - but when you're 5, these things just don't matter.  Little Miss was excited right away at having "lots of twins" and began acting out an episode of My Little Ponies she'd once seen.  Never underestimate a child's ability to get creative. :)  And who can argue that it's easier to share with the Little Brother when you have doubles?  The clothes the sets came with are fun because they're interchangeable and can go on any one of the ponies.  Unlike some of our other toys and dolls, it's very easy to get these little outfits on and off.  No help fro Mom required, which is something I appreciate because I see how frustrating it can be trying to get complicated outfits on small toys a lot of the time.  It can spoil independent play.  Little Miss had no trouble at all and really got into playing with the Fash'ems for a solid chunk of time.  We're looking forward to collecting a few more of these and having lots of options.  I'll be honest, I'm hoping for a Rainbow Dash!  As mentioned before, these would make great loot bag goodies, rewards for a job well done, or a nice little addition to gifts for any child.

You can learn about the other varieties of Fash'Ems here!  They're available in My Little Pony, Hello Kitty and Littlest Pet Shop.  Also check out Mash'Ems in Ninja Turtles, Marvel, Pixar and more.

Disney's PLANES Movie #Review

Recently, my family and I had the opportunity to check out an advanced screening of Disney's Planes in Disney Digital 3D.  After first hearing about it, I looked up the trailer to show my kids.  I wanted to gauge my son's interest in the film, since I was thinking it'd make his perfect first movie going experience!  He LOVED it.  He asked me to play the video on my laptop again and again -- he was immediately sold.

So off we went to the movie theatre a couple of nights ago to see his very first movie.  Both of my kids had a fabulous time watching the film and I couldn't believe how interested they were.  My little squirmy not-quite-two year old boy sat happily in his seat with his funky 3D kid sized glasses, totally enthralled by Dusty and the rest of the planes.  I had fun watching too, as the character development of these funny vehicles really has you forget that you're watching Planes and not people!   There's action, adventure, lots of funny jokes (some for Moms and Dads, and some for the kids) and a really wonderful message of never giving up, being a great friend, and learning to love you for you.

PLANES

From above the world of “Cars” comes Disney’s “Planes,” an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty, a small-town plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to naval aviator Skipper, who helps Dusty qualify to take on Ripslinger, the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar. “Planes” takes off in theatres in 3D on Aug. 9, 2013, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theatres.

SO what are ya waiting for?!  Fly on over to your nearest theatre and check out DISNEY'S PLANES for yourself!  It's a fun family outing for Moms, Dads and Kids of all ages.

Enjoy!

Hasbro Angry Birds Star Wars Millennium Bounce Game #Review & Promo Code

In celebration of May 4th -- or as Star Wars fans everywhere like to call it, Star Wars Day -- I was given the opportunity to review Hasbro's new Angry Birds Star Wars Millennium Bounce Game, and the new Angry Birds Star Wars Foam Flyer.

ANGRY BIRDS™ STAR WARS® MILLENNIUM FALCON™ BOUNCE GAME  (Approx Retail $19.99)

Bounce into action with the new ANGRY BIRDS STAR WARS MILLENNIUM FALCON BOUNCE GAME. Bounce three balls at the MILLENNIUM FALCON to knock down as many enemy pigs as possible, and land in the cockpit to score big! Also includes a code to unlock ANGRY BIRDS STAR WARS in-app content.

The game was a hit with my 4 year old!  It was fun for us to spend some time putting the game together while her little brother was snoozing.  The assembly is something that older kids could certainly do on their own -- the game is actually rated for ages 8+, but with a parents help there's no reason why a younger child can't adapt the rules and play it also.  Do be sure that there are no small children around for safety reasons, ie. small pieces are a choking hazard.  D loved the bouncy Angry Birds Star Wars balls with the characters on them, as she (like her Daddy) is a huge Star Wars fan!  The game involves bouncing the balls and knocking characters into the Millennim Falcon cockpit.  What's nice about it is that as many as 4 players can play, and as few as 1 ... Which means kiddos can entertain themselves with this game for a long time, even when there are no friends or siblings around to play with.  Love that!

ANGRY BIRDS STAR WARS FOAM FLYERS  (Approx. Retail $9.99)

This was a hit also.  It's a foam ball in the shape of an Angry Bird Star Wars character.  We got Chewy!  I'll admit even I had fun throwing it at the wall outside.  These are available in LUKE SKYWALKER, CHEWBACCA, DARTH VADER and STORMTROOPER.  Collect them all!  We sure will be.  :)

*** Use the Promo Code SWFANDAY for 20% off any Star Wars toy on HasbroToyShop.com, only on May 4th ***

Itzbeen Pocket Nanny: #Review & #Giveaway (Can. Ends 04/20)

Every parent knows that caring for a newborn is one of the single most exhausting things you will EVER do in your entire life.  The first year can be a blur, nevermind those first few days!  I remember giving birth to my daughter via c-section and after recovery being wheeled into a hospital room filled with 5 other patients and their newborn babies.  The hospital was full to the brim and the private room I had asked for was not available.  I broke down into tears that night, when I finally had fallen asleep and someone else's baby started to scream.  What a horrendous experience for a new Mom!  And on top of it all, I was caring for the newest love of my life, my new baby girl -- trying to remember which side to breastfeed on, when she last had a bowel movement, how long she'd been sleeping... And fishing around for a little pencil and piece of paper in the dark, because I knew the nurse would be asking me all of those questions the next time she stopped in.

What is an Itzbeen?
The Itzbeen Pocket Nanny is a handy little gadget that, with just a touch of a button, can keep track of all of these details for you.  It tracks feedings, changes, sleep and anything else you want to monitor so that you don't have to.  And it's so, so simple to use!  Once it's set, there is a button (with a picture, so even zombified parents don't have to think to use it ;)  for each item, and all you have to do is touch it once when baby has been fed, changed, etc.  It also has a little night light, so you can see what you're doing in the dark.  Sure beats fumbling around with a pencil and a piece of paper!  This would be a FANTASTIC addition to a hospital bag, or a great gift for a new Mom or a Mom to be.  I can honestly say I would have loved to have had one of these when either one of my children were born, and I will be passing my Itzbeen along to my Sister in Law for when she gives birth to my new niece or nephew.

Want one?
You can purchase an Itzbeen at www.itzbeen.com or Enter to WIN an Itzbeen Pocket Nanny for you or someone you know who could use an extra bit of help with the new little babe!  Contest open to Residents of Canada, ends on April 20th, 2013.

The Mommy Hook Review & #Giveaway - Ends Feb.28/13, CAN.

One of my favourite things to do with the kids on a nice day is to walk to the nearby stores, browse Winners and Jysk, then pick up something different to make for dinner at Safeway. I often will take the double stroller, as by the time we get home it's been a few solid hours of walking (D's not-so-little feet get tired) and depending on how "spendy" I'm feeling that day I sometimes come home with quite a haul of stuff!

When I found out about The Mommy Hook stroller hanger, I KNEW I had to try it out! It's perfect for such an occasion. The Mommy Hook is a large, heavy-duty aluminum hook, with cushy foam along one side (to prevent sliding) perfect to hang off of strollers, wagons, shopping carts or to hold in your hand and help you carry all of those extra bags!  I love this thing!

To test it out, I packed up my two cute kids into their stroller and we set out to my niece's birthday party a few blocks away.  Since I'm such a super duper awesome Auntie, my niece's birthday gift was FAR too big to fit in the stroller basket, so I used The Mommy Hook to hang the ginormous gift bag!  It worked wonderfully!  My hands were free to push the stroller through the snow, and the gift remained just as pretty as when I first wrapped it.

Have I sold you on this thing yet?  Check out www.TheMommyHook.com to find out where to buy one!  Or try your luck and maybe you could win one right here.  :)
